When people hear the name Nakiwogo, their thoughts usually drift toward the landing site and the ferry crossing over to Kalangala. But tucked within this vibrant community is another gem: Nakiwogo Primary School. Founded in 1994, the institution has stood as a strong pillar of education for over three decades.

Recently, Lapatutu Writing Creations organized a letter-writing competition at the school, challenging pupils to write a letter advising a friend against littering.

As a brand, environmental responsibility is extraordinarily close to our hearts. We love seeing our customers enjoy our snacks, but we care just as deeply about what happens to the packaging afterward. Supporting an initiative that teaches young minds to honor and care for their surroundings made our partnership with Lapatutu a natural fit.

Newman’s proudly provided the winners with school bags and pens to keep their writing and education journeys going.

But for us, the highlight of the Grand Finale was an unexpected heartwarming moment.

When our Head of Marketing, Mr. Katende Uthman, took to the stage, he was met with energetic cheers. After thanking the pupils for such a warm reception, he took a moment to connect with them on a deeper level, asking a simple yet intentional question: “Who is your Imam here at school?”

Without a second’s hesitation, the entire assembly shouted out the names of two young pupils who lead their peers in prayer. Mr. Uthman called them forward, recognizing and rewarding both student leaders with gifts right on the spot as seen in the picture. 

At Newman’s, we believe that education extends far beyond textbooks. Strong moral foundations—rooted in faith, mutual respect, and community leadership—are what shape children into responsible citizens. Seeing young pupils actively living out their faith and being celebrated by their peers was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.

From teaching environmental stewardship through the power of the written word to honoring spiritual leadership in the classroom, it was a day of profound connection.
