Journalism is undergoing a massive transformation, and the next generation of storytellers is leading the charge. This year, the Media Challenge Initiative (MCI) is bringing back the National Newsroom Contest on October 31st, taking the competition to a whole new level to celebrate the future of student journalism.
Under the theme “Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Reimagine Our Communities Through Responsible Journalism,” the 2026 edition centers on building the capacity of young journalists.
The goal is to equip upcoming media professionals with the skills to leverage AI as a powerful, responsible tool for public good and community transformation.
At Newman’s, we strongly believe in investing in the minds and potential of young talent across Uganda. Partnering with the Media Challenge Initiative for this year’s contest allows us to support innovation, responsible storytelling, and the future of media.
As these brilliant student journalists research, report, and compete, Newman’s snacks will be right alongside them—keeping their energy up and their focus sharp throughout the contest.
We are excited to see how these young storytellers leverage technology to shape the future of journalism and uplift our communities.
To all the participating students and universities, get ready to showcase your best, we can’t wait to celebrate your impact on October 31st!
