Oh Uganda! The Land that Feeds Us

The national anthem of Uganda captures the essence of this vibrant nation, particularly in the heartfelt words of the third stanza, composed by the brilliant Ugandan musician and composer, George Wilberforce Kakoma, in 1962 upon the country gaining its independence:

Oh Uganda! The land that feeds us,
By sun and fertile soil grown,

For our own dear land,
We’ll always stand,

The Pearl of Africa’s Crown.

George Wilberforce Kakoma, was far more than a songwriter. He was a distinguished and highly trained musician whose credentials reflect a brilliant mind dedicated to his craft. Kakoma undertook advanced studies at some of the most prestigious institutions, including the Royal College of Music in London, the Trinity College of Music, and the University of Durham in the UK.

He shared his knowledge as a music teacher in schools and at Makerere University. Later in his illustrious career, his influence crossed national borders when he contributed to the East African Anthem composition, solidifying his status as a true Ugandan musical icon.

At Newman’s, we live this anthem! The phrase, “The land that feeds us, by sun and fertile soil grown,” directly speaks to our operations. We have seen firsthand the incredible power of the Ugandan sun and the wealth of its fertile soil that enables us to grow the quality produce essential for our products.

It is this foundational blessing that allows us to commit to quality, ensuring that every crop we source is nurtured by this beautiful land. When you choose a Newman’s product, you’re not just enjoying a quality snack; you’re tasting the authentic, rich bounty of the “Pearl of Africa.”

We proudly stand for our own dear land and strive to contribute to its legacy as “The Pearl of Africa’s Crown.”
