How Newman's is championing Mindset Change for the Ugandan Farmer

The story of Ugandan agriculture is often one of abundance, yet many smallholder farmers struggle to translate their hard work into consistent, long-term prosperity. At Newman’s, we saw this gap and realized the most critical tool we could offer wasn’t just a market; it was Mindset Change.

Our mission is to “transform Uganda’s Agricultural abundance into Global Excellence,” and that transformation starts right on the farm, fueled by confidence, commitment, and commercial thinking. This is the heart of the Newman Foods Limited Outgrower Policy. (Click here to read the full policy)

For many years, farming has been a way of life, primarily focused on feeding the family in much of rural Uganda. This is what we call subsistence farming. Our policy is designed to actively promote a shift toward a commercial, entrepreneurial mindset.

What does this look like in practice?

  • Viewing the Farm as a Business: Our training encourages outgrowers to treat their land like a company, where inputs (like quality seeds and fertilizer) are investments, and yield is a profit metric.
  • Adopting Best Practices: We provide mandatory training in Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) and modern commercial farming techniques. This isn’t just about growing food; it’s about growing high-value products that meet the specific quality and grade requirements for both local and international markets (including Europe).
  • Financial Preparedness: Mindset change is crucial for navigating the financial leap. This equips our young men and women in rural areas to manage their earnings, invest in their enterprises, and become reliable, self-reliant business partners.

Mindset change works best when coupled with opportunity and security. Our policy is grounded in a commitment to provide a consistent and reliable off-take market for our farmers’ produce.

The smile in the photo above is the true reflection of the success of our policy. It’s the look of a farmer who knows her farm is a thriving business, rooted in partnership, expertise, and a powerful new commercial mindset.
